How To Start A Fish Tank? The Ultimate Explanation

how to start a fish tank

Your new aquarium needs to be filled. Before adding fish in your new aquarium, make sure to set it up, add water, plants, and substrate and allow it to settle for at least 24 – 48 hours. You will be able to choose which fish will populate your aquarium once you have it set up.

The first thing you need to decide is what kind of fish you want to add to your tank. For example, some fish are better suited to live in smaller tanks, while others are best suited for larger tanks.

Everything is explained in that video:

Is tap water OK for fish tank?

Ordinary tap water is fine for filling up the aquarium as long as you let it sit for several days before adding fish (the chlorine in the tap will kill most of the bacteria). If you want to add fish to your aquarium, you will need to make sure that the water in your tank is not too alkaline or too acidic.

If you have a tank with a pH of 5.5 or above, then you can add a small amount of water to the tank to raise the pH up to 6.0. However, if your pH is too low, your fish will not be able to survive and you may end up with an overabundance of dead fish.

Do I need an air pump for my fish tank?

An air pump works by blowing air through a tank. Air pumps can be used for two purposes. They make sure that you have an adequate concentration of oxygen in your tank. An air pump is NOT required for this purpose, as long as your tank maintains adequate water movement.

Second, air pumps can be used in conjunction with a water pump to increase the flow rate of your water. This is especially useful if you are using a pump that has a built-in air compressor, such as the one found in most aquarium pumps. If you do not want to purchase a separate pump, you can simply use a standard aquarium pump with an air-pump adapter.

What happens if I don’t wait 24 hours to put fish in tank?

The nitrogen cycle can be completed after 24 hours if you put bottled water in a tank at the shop. It will take about a day for the chemicals to be used to bring the levels of nitrates and ammonia in the aquarium back to normal.

The first thing you need to do is to check the pH of your tank. pH is too high, you will not be able to get the bacteria into the water. This is a good sign that your water is not ready to be used as a nitrate source.

You can check your aquarium’s pH by using a pH meter, or by measuring the amount of dissolved oxygen (DCO2) in a solution of water and ammonia (NH4OH). If you have a tank with a low pH, it may be necessary to add a small amount (1-2 ppm) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to the tank to raise its pH back up to a healthy level.

How do you treat an aquarium before adding water?

Always treat tap water with a water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and ammonia before adding it to the aquarium. You should change the filters at least once a month. This will keep the fish healthy and happy.

What should I add to my new fish tank?

Good cover such as objects, plants, and rocks will help your fish. Adding new fish to your aquarium should be preceded by feeding the fish. The existing fish will be less aggressive because of this. Turn your aquarium upside down to make sure you don’t have obstructions in the way of your new fish.

Can I put bottled water in my fish tank?

It’s impractical for large tanks because of the enormous amount of water that needs to be pumped in and out, and using bottled water in your aquarium will make the upkeep of your fish tank much costlier.

If you want to save money on your water bill, you can use a water filtration system to filter the water before it goes into your tank.

This is a great option if you don’t have the space to install a filter system yourself, but it can be a bit of a hassle to set up and maintain.

Can I cover my fish tank with a towel at night?

During winter, you should insulate your tank and all filtration by wrapping them in blankets, towels or cardboard. Don’t cut off the bottom of the tank if you want to cover the top of it.

This will help to keep the water in the filter from getting wet, and will also help prevent algae from growing. You can also use a piece of cardboard or a plastic bag to protect your filters from the rain.

Can fish survive overnight without a filter?

A fish live without a filter for a maximum of seven days and a minimum of three days. The toxins in the water don’t build up if the water is cleaned over and over again. The water was so dirty that it was impossible to filter it out, and it became a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses that can cause illness in humans.
