Making a baking soda paste and spreading it all over the inside of the cooler and lid has worked for me. I kept it closed for the night. I put two or three boxes of baking soda in the cooler and let it sit for a couple of hours. The next day, I put the lid on and put it in the fridge.
The next morning, when I woke up, it was still warm and bubbly. This is what I ended up doing: After a few days of this, the bubbling stopped, and I was able to use it to make a paste that I could spread on the outside of my coolers and lids to keep them from getting too hot.

Why does a cooler smell like fish?
According to a new study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, the cooling pads in swamp coolers may have developed odors.
The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, Colo., found that the pads are often contaminated with bacteria and other contaminants that can cause a range of health problems, including skin irritation, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and respiratory problems.
The researchers also noted that some of the bacteria found in these pads may be harmful to people who are sensitive to them, such as pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. In addition, the researchers said that these bacteria may also be present in other types of coolers that are not covered by the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
The study was funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) to the UIUC Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEH).
