Can a fish survive Ich?
It can’t survive unless live fish are present. It can cause a lot of deaths within a short time. If left unattended, an outbreak of Ich may result in the death of the entire population.
The symptoms of Ich are similar to those of Lyme disease, but the symptoms are more severe. The symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fatigue. In severe cases, the patient may experience seizures, coma, or even death.
Will Ich go away on its own?
No. It may fall off only to reproduce and it will eventually get all your fish. If they are healthy, they can fight it off, but it will always be in your tank waiting for a stressor to take advantage of it. The first thing you should do is to remove them as soon as you see them. This will prevent the eggs from being fertilized and they will not be able to lay eggs.
You can also use a water conditioner to kill off any bacteria that may be on the surface of the water. Another thing that can kill them off is if they get into a tank with a lot of other fish and the fish eat them all up. They will then die off and you will have to start all over again.
How long does ick take to go away?
Some in the fish keeping community think that Ich is present in any tank that holds fish. Once it finds its way to your tank, you will want to act quickly. Thankfully, treatment is usually effective, but you need to be prepared for a few days to a week of treatment. The most common method is to add a small amount of salt to the water.
This will kill the Ich and prevent it from reproducing. If you do not have access to a salt solution, then you can use a solution of 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. You can also add 1 teaspoon of Epsom salts to 1 gallon of water and let it sit for 30 minutes before adding the salt.
Once the solution has been added, add it slowly over the course of 24 hours. Do not add more salt than is needed to cover the entire surface of the aquarium.
