Thirty-one parasite species were recorded in this host from the studied area according to original and literary data. Host-specific parasites of snakehead originate from the Chinese-Indian region or parasites with a wide host range are able to adapt to different environments.
The study was carried out by a team of scientists led by Prof. Dr. Anupam Jain of the Department of Entomology and Nematology, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Bengaluru, India. What diseases do snakehead fish carry?
The team found that a group of adult northern snakehead collected from Virginia waters of the Potomac River south of Washington D.C. were infected with a species of Mycobacterium, a type of bacteria known to cause chronic kidney disease in humans.
“This is the first time we’ve found a case of this in the United States, and it’s a very concerning finding,” said study co-author and University of Maryland School of Veterinary Medicine professor of microbiology and immunology, Dr. Michael Langer, in a press release.
