What kind of wood do you use for a fish tank stand?
I would simply buy some nice 3/4″ birch or oak plywood, build the main carcase out of this (the plywood will support an INSANE amount of weight) and just put a 2X4 vertically in each corner. If you are concerned about the weight in the middle of the tank, you can put a 2X4 going vertically in one corner and a piece of 2×4 on top of it.

How much weight can an aquarium stand hold?
If it is hot rolled, use a yield of about 40 ksi, which is much lower than the tensile. I don’t want to put more than 30 tons on the stand. It would be best to limit the load to a few thousand pounds because failure will be geometric instability.
If you are going to put a lot of weight on a stand, then you need to make sure that you have a way to get the weight off of it. The best way I have found to do this is to place a piece of plywood on top of your stand. This will allow you to lift the whole stand off the ground.
This is a good idea if you plan on putting a large amount of load on it. If you do not have this option, you will have to use something like a crane to move the entire stand up and down. I am not sure if this will work, but it may be worth a try.
Can an aquarium overhang the stand?

Can I use a dresser as a fish tank stand?
If it is a good sturdy type of dresser then yes, it will be fine. In the past, I have used one. Make sure it’s large enough for the entire tank to sit on without hanging over the edge. They tend to be more expensive if you can find one that was built more than 20 years ago.
