Hundreds of species can coexist in the same reef, as it has been estimated that over a third of about 15,000 described species of marine fishes are in coral reefs.
“This is the first time that we have been able to show that some of these species are being affected by climate change,” said co-author and University of Queensland marine ecologist, Dr. David Goulson, from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CRCRS). the study, published in Nature Climate Change, found that the number of coral species that are at risk of extinction has increased by more than 50 per cent over the past 30 years, with the greatest increases occurring in tropical and subtropical reefs.
The study also found a significant increase in coral bleaching events, which can lead to the death of corals.
