A goldfish is lucky to live a year. The average lifespan in a bowl is 3-4 years if you do things right and perform frequent water changes. Goldfish can live up to 10 years if they are fed a balanced diet of fish food and live foods.
If you are feeding your goldfish a diet that is high in protein and low in fat, they will not live as long as a fish that lives on a low-fat diet.
The reason for this is that the body of the fish is not as efficient at converting fat to energy as it is in the case of an animal that eats a high-protein diet, which is why fish are able to live longer than humans.

How do I know my goldfish is dying?
Loss of appetite is what it is. It’s either weakness or listlessness. Most fish are only slightly negatively-buoyant and it takes little effort to maintain position in the water column when floating upside down or sitting on the tank floor. Danger to humans and first aid measures should be taken if any of the following symptoms are present: Sudden loss of consciousness, convulsions, seizures, coma or death.
Seizures and/or coma may occur if the fish is kept in a tank with other fish or in an aquarium with a large number of fish. If you suspect that your fish may be suffering from a seizure or coma, immediately call your local emergency number (such as 911) or the National Poison Helpline (1-) and ask to be connected to a Poison Control Center as soon as possible.
Do not attempt to resuscitate a fish that has stopped breathing, as doing so may result in death from asphyxiation. Symptoms may include rapid breathing (breathing faster than normal), slurred speech, rapid heart rate, muscle twitching or jerking, and rapid eye movements.
Do goldfish get lonely?
Goldfish are just not the same as humans – they’re not social animals in the same way that we are, and they don’t have the same capacity to get bored or long for companionship. Many of the longest living goldfish have been kept alone, with no obvious harm to their health or well-being.
Goldfish can be kept in a variety of tanks, from small, shallow tanks to large, deep tanks. They can also be housed in aquariums that are too small for them, or too large for their tankmates.
How do you know if a goldfish is happy?
Your goldfish should be swimming constantly and not floating, bobbing or sinking. They need to eat and eliminate waste frequently. Variety in your fish’s diet is important. Pellets can become hard to digest and may not be as healthy as fresh food.
If you are feeding pellets, make sure they are high in protein and low in fat. Healthy Fish Your fish should have a healthy digestive system and be free of parasites and diseases. You should also provide them with plenty of fresh water and fresh air.
How often should you feed goldfish?
It’s important to avoid overfeeding goldfish as this can cause indigestion and/or taint the tank. A good rule of thumb is to only feed a small amount that the goldfish can consume in under two minutes, or only feed as much as the size of their mouth is wide enough to swallow. Goldfish are omnivores, meaning that they will eat almost anything they can find in their environment.
They will also eat a wide variety of insects and other small invertebrates as well as small fish and crustaceans such as crayfish, snails, slugs, and worms. The amount of food that you feed your fish will depend on the type of fish you are feeding and how much they are able to eat in a short period of time.
For example, if you were feeding a small, slow-moving fish, you would feed them less than half of what they would normally eat. On the other hand, fish that are very fast eat more than they normally would, so you may want to give them more food than you normally do.
How long can goldfish survive without food?
Goldfish are able to go up to two weeks without food, but it’s not a good idea to leave your fish without food for that long. If you are away for more than three or four days, make sure your goldfish gets its regular daily feedings.
Do goldfish like light?
Goldfish need light and night time darkness. Using lights to illuminate your tank is beneficial to your goldfish, the overall health of your tank, and is an important aspect of keeping your fish healthy and happy. Light cycles simulate the natural cycle of day and night in the fish tank. This is a great way to keep your Goldfish happy and healthy.
You can also use light cycles in conjunction with an aquarium heater to help keep the temperature of the tank at a comfortable level. If you do not have a tank heater, you can use a fluorescent light bulb to simulate night and day cycles. You should be able to tell if your aquarium is lighting up by the amount of light that is coming in and out of it.
For example, if the light is on all the time, it is likely that you are not lighting it up properly. The light should not be too bright or too dim, and it should have enough power to light up the entire tank, but not so much that it overwhelms the other lights.
