Caught early enough a fish can recover, even from a surprisingly dry state. The survival of the fish is dependent on how you handle it immediately. The first thing to do is get the fish out of the water and into a safe place. Dropping the fish in to the tank is not a good idea as it will likely drown.
If you can’t get it out of the water quickly enough, you may need to use a net to catch it. Once you’ve caught it, it’s important to keep it alive as long as possible. This is especially important if you’re going to be keeping it for a long period of time.
It’s also important that you don’t let it get too cold or too hot. A fish that’s been kept too long will begin to lose its ability to regulate its body temperature, which can cause it to become lethargic and eventually die.

The study, which was funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP7/2007–2013), was the first of its kind to look at how temperature affects brain function in marine fishes, and how this affects the fish’s ability to survive in high-temperature environments, such as those found in deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
The study was carried out by a team of researchers led by Dr. Jeroen van den Broeke, a marine biologist at Nijmegen University Medical Center, who is also a professor of neuroscience and marine biology at Umeå University in Sweden.
Does putting a fish in the freezer revive it?
During an over winter, certain species of fish can survive in frozen or near-freezing temperatures.
