Unlike land animals which have lungs to take in oxygen from the air, fish have gills to breathe in water. This process of breathing begins when a fish swallows water. Fish also have a special organ called the olfactory bulb that allows them to detect the odors of their environment.
When a predator comes near, the bulb opens, allowing the animal to smell the predator’s scent. Once the smell is detected, it sends a chemical message to the brain, telling it to move away.

How come fish need oxygen?
Oxygen is just as important to fish life as it is to humans. Dissolved oxygen is the oxygen gas that is dissolved in water. Fish absorb the DO directly from the water into their gills and lungs. Oxygen can also be found in the air we breathe.
The amount of dissolved oxygen in a fish’s body depends on several factors, including the size of the fish, its age, and the type of water it lives in. DOS is the dissolved form of oxygen, which is what fish breathe out of their bodies.
It is also called dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) or dissolved hydrogen sulfide (H2S) because it reacts with water to form H2SO4, a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. In addition to being used by fish to breathe, dissolved DO can be used as a food source for fish and other aquatic organisms. Dose is measured in milligrams per liter (mg/L).
Can a fish drown?
The majority of fish breathe when water moves across their gills. The gills can be damaged if water cannot move across them. They don’t technically drown, because they don’t inhale the water, but they do die from asphyxiation.
“It’s the most common cause of death for fish in the aquarium trade,” said Dr. Michael J. O’Brien, a professor of aquatic medicine at the University of California, Davis, who has studied the effects of water movement on fish.
Do fish get thirsty?
The answer is still no; as they live in water they probably don’t take it in as a conscious response to seek out and drink water. Thirst can be defined as a desire to drink water. It is not likely that fish will respond to such a desire. In fact, it is likely that most fish do not take water in the same way that humans do.
For example, many species of fish, such as tuna and swordfish, are known to be able to survive without water for long periods of time. This is due to the fact that they have evolved to use their gills to filter the water out of the air, which is why they can survive in such extreme conditions.
In contrast, most other fish cannot survive for more than a few hours without drinking water, and even then, they may only do so in very small amounts. The reason for this is that their bodies are not designed to take in large amounts of water at one time, so they need to constantly replenish their water stores.
How do fishes sleep?
While fish do not sleep in the same way that land mammals sleep, most fish do rest. According to research, fish may be less active and less alert to danger. Some fish float in place, others wedge themselves into a secure spot in the mud or coral, and some even locate their food by smelling the water.
In the wild, fish are usually found in groups of two or three, but in captivity they can be as large as 20 or 30 individuals. They are also often fed a high-fat diet, which can cause them to lose weight.
Can fish breathe out of water?

“It’s not like you’re going to go out and buy a gallon of milk and put it in your body,” said Dr. Michael J. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the new study.
Why can’t fish breathe in air?
The projections on the gills float in the water so that they can absorb oxygen. Most of the surface area is blocked by these collapsing together on land. The fish suffocates because they don’t work well. Lungs increase surface area by having many tiny pockets, which don’t have to be filled with air to work. The tail is the most important part of a fish’s body because it has a lot of muscles, and they work together to move the whole body.
It’s also the only part that doesn’t collapse when the body is submerged in water. In fact, if you look closely, you can see that the muscles in the head and tail are connected to each other. This means that if one of them collapses, all the other muscles will collapse with it. That’s why fish are able to swim through the water and not drown.
