Blood in the capillaries picks up oxygen that’s dissolved in the water when the fish opens its mouth. Just like in a car engine, the blood moves through the fish’s body to deliver the oxygen.
“It’s a very efficient system,” said study co-author and University of California, Santa Barbara, professor of biological engineering and bioengineering, Dr. Michael J. O’Donnell. “”The fish has a lot of oxygen in its blood, so it doesn’t have to work as hard to get oxygen to the brain.

What helps them to breathe a fish?
Fish breathe with their gills, and they need a constant supply of oxygen. The operculum has Gills under it. Gill covers are made of keratin, the same material that makes up fingernails and toenails. Keratin is a tough, flexible protein that is found in the skin, hair, nails and nails of many animals, including humans.
It is also found on the inside of the mouth, inside the nose and in many other parts of our bodies. The keratins in our skin and hair are used to protect us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which cause skin cancer and other skin diseases.
Can a fish drown?
The majority of fish breathe when water moves across their gills. The gills can be damaged if water cannot move across them. They don’t technically drown, because they don’t inhale the water, but they do die of suffocation. In the wild, a fish’s gill covers only about half its body. The rest of the body is exposed to the air. When water flows over the exposed part, it pushes air through it.

It’s called a refraction index. Air has a low refraction index that makes it hard to see. Neither us nor fish can see the difference. Refraction is a property of light. Light is made up of particles called photons. Each photon has a wavelength, which is the distance from the center of the photon to the edge of our eyes.
The wavelength is measured in nanometers, or billionths of a meter. A photon is also called a “photon” because it has the same number of protons and neutrons as a proton and a neutron. In other words, a photon can be either a particle or a wave, depending on how it interacts with its environment.

In general, fish that eat a lot of food, such as tuna and salmon, are more likely to have high levels of dissolved DO in their blood than those who eat little or no food.
Why can’t fish breathe on land?
In water, the projections on the gills float, so each is surrounded with water from which it can absorb oxygen. On land, these all collapse together, blocking most of the surface area. The fish suffocates because they don’t work well. Lungs have a lot of small pockets that don’t have to be filled with air to work.
The tail is the most important part of a fish’s body because it has a lot of muscles, and they work together to move the whole body. It’s also the only part that doesn’t collapse when the body is submerged in water.
In fact, if you look closely, you can see that the muscles in the head and tail are connected to each other. This means that if one of them collapses, all the other muscles will collapse with it. That’s why fish are able to swim through the water and not drown.
