The prairie dog has cholesterol monohydrate crystal nucleation and gallstone formation. Epidemiologic studies show that people who consume a diet rich in fish oil have lower rates of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. However, the mechanism(s) by which omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) reduce CVD risk is not well understood.
In this study, we investigated the effect of dietary fish-oil supplementation on the formation of gallstones in a population-based, prospective cohort study. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, cross-over study in which participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo (n = 40) or a high-dose (2 g/d) of fish oils (EPA and DHA) for 12 wk.
The primary outcome measure was the incidence of a first-degree relative colorectal adenoma (FRA) during the 12-wk intervention period. Secondary outcomes included the number of FRAs per 100,000 person-years and the proportion of participants who developed a second- or third- degree relative COLA.

How long does it take for fish oil to get in your system?
Omega 3’s build up quickly in the body once you take supplements. It may take 6 weeks to 6 months to see a change in mood according to a new study. The study, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, looked at the effects of a supplement called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which is found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines.
The researchers found that people who took the supplement for six weeks saw a decrease in their levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which has been linked to depression and anxiety. They also saw an increase in a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that is known to be involved in brain cell growth and development.
