Who should not take fish oil?
According to a new study, people using blood thinners, such as warfarin, should not take fish oil or other omega 3 supplements because of the increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The study, published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, looked at data from more than 1.5 million people who were followed for an average of 10 years.
The researchers found that people taking fish-oil supplements were more likely to have heart attacks and strokes than those who didn’t take the supplements, even after adjusting for other risk factors, including age, body mass index (BMI), smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. People who took fish oils were also at a higher risk for developing heart disease than the general population, the study found.
Are all fish oil supplements rancid?
According to a new study published in the journal of the american medical association, more than one in 10 fish oil supplements tested are rancid. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) in Bethesda, Maryland, is the first to examine the levels of rancidity in more than 1,000 supplements sold in retail stores across the U.S. The study was funded by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a nonprofit environmental group that advocates for the health and well-being of people and wildlife, as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates dietary supplements.
“Rancidity is a major concern for consumers,” said study co-author Dr. Michael Siegel, an associate professor of dentistry at UCSF.
Why fish oil is bad for you?
