Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) is a syndrome that people can develop if they eat seafood contaminated by a red tide. It shows itself within 2 hours of consumption, and can be life threatening. This may be accompanied by nausea:
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle aches
or loss of consciousness.
The symptoms can last from a few hours to several days. PSP may also experience other symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting. If you have symptoms of PSP, seek medical attention immediately.
Is red tide toxic to humans?
Most people are safe in the water. Florida red tide can cause some people to suffer skin irritation and burning eyes. The blooms may cause respiratory irritation for people with respiratory illness. Red tides are caused by a combination of bacteria, viruses, algae, and other microscopic organisms that live in warm, nutrient-rich water.
These organisms can survive in water that is too hot or too cold for them to survive naturally. When these organisms die, they release toxins into the water, which can be harmful to people and animals. If you are exposed to these toxins, you may experience symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or diarrhea-like symptoms.
In some cases, these symptoms may be severe enough to require hospitalization. You should also consult your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms: nausea or vomiting that lasts more than a few hours; difficulty breathing or swallowing; or a change in your vision or hearing.
Can you keep fish during red tide?

When the oxygen level drops too low, fish can die from asphyxiation, or suffocation. Red tides can occur in any part of the world, but are most common in tropical and subtropical waters.
Can red tide make you sick?
The red tide’s toxins can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory system for beachgoers. Chronic bronchitis and chronic lung disease are symptoms that can be found in people with underlying chronic respiratory conditions. Symptoms of red tides include headache (Complete list below)

In severe cases, these symptoms can lead to respiratory failure, coma and even death.
How long does red tide sickness last?
People with severe or chronic respiratory conditions (such as bronchitis, emphysema or asthma) are cautioned to avoid red tide areas. Generally, symptoms are temporary and disappear within hours (once exposure is discontinued). Air-conditioned facilities decrease symptoms for most people. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
How long after red tide can you eat shellfish?
Oysters are not safe to eat right now due to illegal harvesting. But the good news is that, because of their ability to filter-feed, shellfish like oysters and clams will naturally purge themselves of Red Tide toxins roughly four weeks after a Red Tide event. If you are concerned about the health of your seafood, the best thing you can do is to avoid eating it.
Can red tide give you diarrhea?
People who eat seafood contaminated with red tide can experience a variety of symptoms. Symptoms will disappear in as little as 24 hours after eating contaminated shellfish. Shellfish poisoning can be prevented by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing food.
Can you cook off red tide?
Boiling does not destroy the toxin. The water that the shellfish are cooked in doesn’t remove all of the toxins. The best way to determine if your oysters are infected is to take a sample from the bottom of your tank.
You can do this by placing a piece of plastic wrap over the top of a glass of water and submerging the entire tank in it. If you can’t see any water in the glass, it’s safe to assume that you have an Oyster infestation.
