New research shows that loud noise can damage the ears of fish. In the first ever study of the effects of loud man-made sound on fish in the wild, University of California, Davis, researchers found that fish exposed to high levels of noise for more than two hours a day had significantly reduced hearing in their ears. The study was published online today (April 10) by the journal PLOS ONE.
The research was conducted by researchers from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and was funded by a grant from Audubon Society of North America, the National Science Foundation and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) grant to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Marine Mammal Program.
“This study is a first step toward understanding the impact of manmade noise on marine mammals,” said lead author Dr. Michael J. O’Brien, a professor of veterinary medicine and director of otolaryngology at the veterinary school.
