A type of free-livingbacteria found in non-chlorinated water like that found in home aquariums is called Mycobacterium marinum. This bacteria has been known to cause opportunistic infections in humans, including a rare form of meningitis called meningoencephalitis (Meningitis A).
(CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have both issued warnings about the risk of Meningococcal disease in people who drink tap water that has not been treated with chlorine. CDC recommends that people not drink water with a chlorine concentration of less than 0.5 parts per billion (ppb).
FDA has also issued a warning about this risk, but it does not recommend that you avoid drinking water if it is not chlorinated.
