In the study, researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) every two years. They found that people who took high-dose vitamin supplements were more than twice as likely to develop diabetes as those who did not take the supplements.
The risk was even higher among women, who were nearly three times more likely than men to be diagnosed with diabetes after taking high dosages of vitamins C and E, vitamin A, and beta-carotene, the researchers said. C is found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fish, eggs and dairy products. It is also found naturally in some foods, including green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits.
