Gas-filled spaces are found in deep-sea organisms. Under high pressure, the gas expands. These organisms have been known to blow up if they come to the surface too quickly.
In the new study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) found that these vortices can be used as a way to measure the rate at which the ocean is warming.
The team used data collected by the Deep Sea Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), a network of more than 1,000 remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) operated by NOAA’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), to map the distribution of deep-ocean heat content (DOHC) over the past 30 years.
They then used the data to calculate the average rate of warming over that time period, which they found to be about 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade, or about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit per century.
