Siamese fighting fish have a special labyrinth organ which allows them to take in surface air and give them oxygen in the water. They cannot survive on surface air alone (they also need oxygen in the water) but it is a necessary form of oxygenation – without surface air oxygen levels can drop to dangerously low levels.
The fish are also able to regulate their body temperature, which is vital to their survival. When the temperature is too high, the fish can freeze to death, while when it’s too low, they can die of hypothermia.
